Live reporting by Benjamin Haddix

Commissioners passed a resolution that red-light-running is a serious issue affecting the safety of Detroiters, and pledged to collaborate with community organizations and the city to reduce it while admitting they are not the police and have no power to enforce traffic laws.

Bhx @BhxDetroit 2/21
Meeting has been called to order
Bhx @BhxDetroit 3/21
Public comments has started
Bhx @BhxDetroit 4/21
It seems as though the last commenter (unnamed) was told their time was up with 25 seconds still remaining
Bhx @BhxDetroit 5/21
As of now in the meeting the following commission members are ABSENT Linda Bernard – District 2 Willie E. Bell – District 4 – (excused absence) Willie E. Burton – District 5 Lisa Carter – District 6 – (excused absence)
Bhx @BhxDetroit 6/21
Commissioner Burton is now present
Bhx @BhxDetroit 7/21
And so now is Commissioner Bernard present as well
Bhx @BhxDetroit 8/21
Commissioner Banks (District 3) reading a resolution committing to collaborate with community organizations and the city on the issue of people running red lights in Detroit, recognizing it as a public health issue
Bhx @BhxDetroit 9/21
and the "Red Light Resolution" is passed unanimously. A public commenter who advocated for the issue has been invited to say a few words. He asks people to join him in Lansing to further advocate for the issue
Bhx @BhxDetroit 10/21
Now the report from the chief of police is being shared by a deputy
Bhx @BhxDetroit 11/21
She suggests that total crime is down 9% in the city, and proceeds to discuss their work addressing drag racing and block parties
Bhx @BhxDetroit 12/21
Commissioner Burton asks the rep for the police department what the department is doing about air quality and the corporations leading to poor air quality
Bhx @BhxDetroit 13/21
The deputy rep suggests that the commission go through state representative for the EPA
Bhx @BhxDetroit 14/21
The commission offered much praise for district 4 commander Shelley Holderbaum who shared updates for her district, especially from commissioners Moore and Bernard
Bhx @BhxDetroit 15/21
More public comments are taking place
Bhx @BhxDetroit 16/21
A public commenter is reminding the commission to center addressing police misconduct (my thoughts: whether this is mutually exclusive with praising the progress of the police department is an interesting question)
Bhx @BhxDetroit 17/21
Public commenter points out that air quality IS in fact within the purview of the police department, as was raised by commissioner Burton. The example given is laws around idling cars and trucks – grossly unenforced, per the commenter, and a big factor in poor air quality.
Bhx @BhxDetroit 18/21
Fairly sure that 2 commenters now have been cut short by about 25 seconds. The last example was confused by having to restart the timer amongst some commotion in the room, but the commenter never received a full, uninterrupted 2 minutes
Bhx @BhxDetroit 19/21
Meeting adjourned at 7:56
